Wordle, a very useful way of procrastinating

November 25, 2010

I “finished” my NaNoWriMo novel some days ago. Please note the quotation marks. 50K is not the end. – It’s the point where I frantically begin to wrap up the story.
Curious? My novel looks like this:

That is a graphic representation of the first 58,000 words (what I have written so far) of my novel this year. It shows the words used most often. Unsurprisingly, my protagonist’s name is Sean, and his partner is called Matthew. Now, this is really fun, the results look cool and it’s useful. It’s a really good tool to see if your text overuses certain words (I mean, it is really a good sign that I have written “really” that often?).

“And where,” you ask, “can I find this brilliant contraption?” Easy. Just click the link and go to the Wordle website. I owe Chris Baty of NaNoWriMo a huge thank you for linking to Wordle in the OLL blog.

Anyway. I should get back to writing that novel now. I think I can make it to the conclusion. I have sketched a few scenes that will be fleshed out later, because otherwise I don’t think it would be possible to write the end before November ends. And this year, I would certainly like to have told the story that I set out to tell (and not the first part of a trilogy like last year).

I plan to go back and see why I use Back so often. It will be a good editing tool.

      Hehe, brilliant.
It’s a nice editing tool – and makes pretty pictures of words. What else can we ask for? 😉

Congratulations on finishing ahead of time and way over the mark. 🙂

Excellent word tool, I will use it when I edit my NaNo. I already know I’m too fond of “smile” and its variations.

Thank you very much! 😀 I’m still trying to wrap up the story, so I think/hope I’ll manage to hit 65K before the end of November.
I’m glad you found the link useful! Oh yes, “smile” is a classic, I think. A little like “nod” tends to be.

Nicely done! Congrats on getting through the 50K and even bigger kudos on still going!

I’ll certainly check out that link to the Wordie website – thanks!

Your Wordle would make a great souvenir of your NaNo experience- and maybe even be a great piece of artwork hanging on a wall.

Wouldn’t it just? I’m tempted to do this with every story I finish.
Thank you for your comment! 🙂

Jeg æææælsker Wordle. Og jeg fik endda lov til at sidde og lege med alle farverne, da mine historier ikke er monokrome 😉
    Min ser sådan her ud:

Måske skulle jeg passe lidt på alle bandeordene 😀

Yes, isn’t it brilliant? I had lots of fun dragging various texts through it. A few swear words, yes, and lots of places. How intriguing.
