Webly Wednesday: Word clouds and tornado relief flash fiction

May 4, 2011

Do you remember Wordle? Meet its family.

Word cloud made with Tagxedo

What is the point of word clouds? Well, it is useful for seeing if you overuse certain words when you write. If “damn” is the biggest word when you’ve copy/pasted your novel of 90,000 words into a word cloud maker, you may want to consider being a bit more creative with the swearing. Or why you chose to call your main character “Damn” in the first place … Anyway, I digress. Word clouds are useful tools for writers. They can make pretty pictures that can be used as illustrations or that you almost want to print out and put on your wall. Also, they’re fun.

I found some more to play with:

  • Tagxedo
Would you like your word cloud the shape of an elephant? An umbrella? A key, an angel or a bat? No problem. Tagxedo has loads of layouts.
  • WordItOut
If you think that word clouds are so cool that you want them on a t-shirt or a mug, this is the way to go.
  • ABCya!
Intended for kids to have fun with. Easy and user-friendly.
On another note, Dan O’Shea is hosting a brilliant flash fiction challenge. He will donate $5 to Red Cross for every story of 1,000 words or less that he gets. The only condition is that the stories have to be about rain. I’ll upload my story here soon and if you want to donate one, and you have until May 7th.
Oh, and by the way … If anyone finds a connection between the elements of this post’s title, that is a completely unintentional pun on my part. Bad and unintentional.
Enjoy!

It’s time for me to do the word cloud. And I already know which words my blasphemous protagonist over-uses. But maybe she has Tourette’s Syndrome. Haven’t decided yet.

I’m doing the O’Shea challenge too. 🙂 It’ll be part 3 of my trilogy starting with my “Stank Hen” story. I look forward to reading your rain interpretation!

I realised that my narrator goes “just” too much in my last NaNoWriMo thanks for Wordle. Now that I’m editing, I’m teaching him to say “only” and “barely” and nothing at all. 😉

Oh yes, I say your comment and name on the honour roll! Ooh, there’s going to be more? I’m looking forward to reading that! 😀
I asked my muse for a story about rain. When he replied, “Does it have to be PG?” I thought it’d be about sex. It turned out not to be, though. I have it typed up and ready to go, but I’m not sure if we’re supposed to post them on the 7th or before the 7th. XD

I think the “rain” deadline is sometime this Saturday, not sure of the time zone. I’m posting mine on Friday, to be on the safe side.

My part 2 in my trilogy will be in response to Wendig’s tribute to his dog. Posting that tonight. 🙂

Right, I’ll post mine here tomorrow or Friday as well. 🙂
Looking forward to the second part!

Thanks for visiting over at MWi.

Flash fiction can be an excellent way to start the writing day, especially if you’re struggling to get those first words down.

Dan O’Shea’s Red Cross donation idea sounds great, though could get expensive if the idea gets RTed far and wide!

Most intrigued by your recent post on foriegn language use. Will have to come back and trawl your archives further when time permits.

You’re welcome – and thank you for visiting me!
I’ve become quite a flash fictioneer lately, so the challenge was right up my alley. Yeah, it could get expensive.
Thank you! You’re more than welcome here whenever you want to. As you know, I am very fond of inputs and opinions should the mood strike.

Thank you! Me and some friends were just talking about personal kill lists, and I had no idea how to start mine! This will be a good place. Thank you!

And I thought Wordle was fun! My story would look so much better as Mona Lisa or Abraham Lincoln.

Ha! Thanks for the fun links.
